The Americana Music Association relies on the financial support of the community to sustain its various projects throughout the year. Described by Emmylou Harris as a group "living on the fringe of the mainstream," the feisty not-for-profit has spearheaded numerous initiatives to fight for artist rights and to raise the profile of the Americana community.
This past year, the Americana Music Association was busy supporting new GRAMMY categories for American roots music artists; lobbying for a seat at a congressional debate, where Rosanne Cash spoke eloquently in support of fair pay for artists and songwriters; producing the first tribute to honor the Everly Brothers after the passing of Phil Everly; and curating a prestigious weeklong event in New York City, Americanafest NYC, in partnership with Lincoln Center. All of these efforts served to further highlight Americana artists and the community, as it very quietly has become one of the fastest growing music genres today.
The organization's primary fundraiser is the annual Americana Music Festival & Conference, presented by Nissan, in Nashville, TN. The event brings together fans, artists, and music industry executives alike offering six days of celebration through seminars, panels and networking opportunities by day and raw, battery-recharging showcases each night. The Association's Honors & Awards show, the festival's capstone event, was filmed at the Ryman Auditorium this past September for a program entitled ACL Presents: Americana Music Festival 2014 which is airing this week on PBS stations nationwide (check your local listings).
